c.s. peirce (1839-1914) came up with a useful system for categorizing imagery and its relationship to the subject. it has many other parts, but the part I have found most useful is th eicon, image, and symbol. the icon refers to the resemblance of the image to its subject, its resemblance or likeness. the index of the image refers to the physical relationship between the image and its subject–this may be the time shared between subject and camera in a snapshot. symbols are abstractions or systems that emerge in the image, usually referring to language or other contexts outside of the image.

today’s assignment is to make a drawing out of letters; peirce’s system may be of some help. note that this is not the same as making letters out of natural things (leaves or patterns on butterfly wings), nor is it the same as concrete poetry, though that’s more like it.

johannes itten (1888-1933) taught at the weimar republic’s bauhaus school from 1919-1933. while there he devised a system of color and wrote several lucid and well-illustrated books about color theory. the books present many ideas about color harmonies which are still useful today.

itten believed in a kind of absolute color harmony, but his students strongly disagreed with his choices. so he challenged each student to make a harmonious color group. after seeing that every student had collected unique color harmonies, itten accepted that harmonies are more personal than absolute. he collected their photographs and colors into a file which he includes in the book interaction of color.

you all have favorite colors and complements. today I want you to try and capture those colors. here are a couple of examples from itten’s book.

My project is a spec commercial for a skateboard company. I am using the Panasonic Hi Def camera to shoot a skater doing a trick in front of a green screen. This will allow me to take the skater out of this world and fill in any background i like using Apple Motion. The skater will be in a highly reflective environment, and using Flash, I will animate an entire city to rise around him as he completes the trick. I believe the city will be my home town of Los Angeles, and the basic idea of the commercial is, whatever city you’re in, skate it. The closest video ive seen that uses this type of design would be Kanye West’s new video for The Good Life. The city will be very colorful and design is the most important part of the commercial.

<strike>digital graphic novella :: Using illustrations done by hand and inked/detailed in photoshop (and animated when needed in flash), i will make a digital graphic novella, where instead of traditional panels the viewer will see all the action move before their eyes. Its a combination of a animated short and a comic book, using After Effects to move illustrations through a 3D space with 3D elements like lights and environment effects like smoke to add more depth and tone to the piece.
The story itself is a simple narrative of a guy being welcomed into a local gang. This simple story was chosen to show off a certain noir style heavily influenced by a relatively new concept of digital storytelling and art. This project will be largely based on the visuals, and due to its complexity and time restriction, the narrative will be sacrificed before the aesthetics to remain in the realm of graphic design.</strike>

For my finalproject I have chosen to try something very ambitious and create a font. Before actually sitting down to design the typeface, I plan on researching typography much more. I have a limited knowledge of the subject and want to use this project to learn more about typography. By searching online and reading through books on typography and design I hope to gain inspiration for my own font. Whether it will be serif or sans-serif is still up in the air. After creating my typeface, I hope I have something that is representative of me.

The toys would hopefully pertain to a certain theme, perhaps one of the restaurant’s (if not, they can be based on a movie or something, as real kids’ meal toys usually are). In addition to some basic HTML, a lot of the project would be in flash and animated, as it is in real life.

Based on my previous project, I am going to work on my friend’s CD album artwork. I expect I’ll make whole CD artworks design, which could be 8 pages booklet, CD label, front inlay, back inlay and obi-strips. the obi-strips is very common in Japan CD industry. Obi is just a paper cover on the left side of CD case. Then, total could be 12 pages design.

My goal; the design comes from music. I believe the picture could be born from music itself. Because every song has own story I believe. The important thing is; how to organize those songs in whole design. So I want to apply the design to music.

Whole concept; soft/relax/sensitive/love/but large scale. This album title is “DEAR”, and sang by Japanese male musician, Tsukasa Takeda. He mentioned that concept for album”DEAR”.
Mainly his music style is Acoustic guitar sound. Other few songs’ instrumentals are little bit percussion, base, and bit synthesizer sound. For me, his sound is natural; not too much clean, and little bit sketchy. When I listened his last song “DEAR”, I imagined that bright lights behind the big tree and someone journey on his way, and I just look at such view. The color is really soft and bright. Then I decided to use water color for artwork. I want to keep focus on the watercolor taste.

According to him, in December 2007 he is going to sell/release this CD album from his own label.

Note; he is indie’s musician. http://takeda-tsukasa.com/

Ok well thinking about how short time is and how little experience I have with the idea of an enormous popup book, I decided to downsize my project. I just bought a new domain name which I wanted to make into a portfolio site. I want to design and complete my own artwork on illustrator and create a picture viewer of my previous work as well as
creating an intro flash animation. I’m not sure entirely of the actual layout but I was thinking of going with the pop up theme though simpler and see how it animates. I am sure I will need help when it comes to learning the programs as problems arise but I feel fairly confident that I can complete part of it through those programs with the knowledge I have. I want to make sure my idea translates me as a designer as well as familiarizing myself with new programs.

My finalproject is going to be a portfolio website. I have never been allowed to make a personal site for any other classes and I would like to have all my work in a collective space. Over the years I have collected doodles, oil painting, and photographs. And in the more recent years have shot a lot of film and video and would also like to add my reel onto my portfolio site. I plan to include my resume as well. I plan on using photoshop to design my site and plan on linking it in dreamweaver.
