PR: Build a camera to shoot paper photos

DIY 4x5 Camera Project!

Objective:

Create a functional camera using cheap materials (provided!). This project will explore the basics of camera construction, optics, and the challenges and creativity involved in DIY photography equipment.

Materials:

  • 3/16" black foam core
  • Gaffers tape (or other durable tape)
  • Sharp knife
  • T-square or cutting edge
  • Ground glass or alternative (e.g., sanded plexiglass or tracing paper)
  • Sandpaper
  • Optional: magnifying lens

Steps:

1/ Research and Planning:

  • Read about large format photography and camera design basics.
  • Sketch a basic design including measurements.
  • Use an online box designer to specify cuts. https://www.templatemaker.nl/en/ is good!

2/ Construction:

  • Main Box: Construct using four walls. Ensure that you box can handle standard 4x5 film paper!
  • Lens Box: Design to slightly fit inside the main box.
  • Lensboard: Allocate two layers of foam core for stability.
  • Ground Glass/film paper holder: Construct from three plies, ensuring it aligns with the film plane.

3/ Assembly:

  • Use gaffers tape to secure the structure; focus on stability at joints.
  • (OPTIONAL) Fit the lens through a snug opening in the lens board for testing.
  • Insert "ground glass" and align for the expected focal plane.

4/ Testing and Adjustments:

  • Using a lens? Test focus outdoors or in well-lit environments.
  • Make note of any light leaks or structural weaknesses and propose solutions.

5/ Documentation:

  • Capture images with the camera and document the results (scanning or photographing the negatives).
  • Write a report detailing your process, insights, challenges, and modifications you'd consider for an improved version.

6/ Evaluation Criteria:

  • Functionality: Does the camera capture images effectively?
  • Invention and Creativity: How did the project reflect creative problem-solving?
  • Documentation: Clarity, thoroughness, and reflection in project reporting.
