Perpetual Motion

A coin offered to a marigold on the wet cobbles — the small tribute given again and again, forever.

The gesture has all the signs of an event: the hand approaches, the coin changes position, an offering seems about to be made. But nothing is established by its completion. The flower never possesses the coin; the hand never finally relinquishes it. The action ends without becoming part of the world.

The tribute can be given forever because it is never quite given once.
