Faced Dancers
A troupe of dancers, every one of them wearing my face.
The bodies remain different — different poses, gestures, costumes, positions in the frame — but their faces converge on a single identity. What should distinguish one person from another has been replaced by what makes them all read as the same person. Difference survives everywhere except where identity is assigned.
The result reverses the usual work of a face. Instead of separating one member of a crowd from another, it becomes a category distributed across the crowd. "My face" no longer identifies a particular body; it is the rule under which many bodies are gathered. The individual has become a type.
