Lumière's Photographers

Two passes: the model scans each frame for a human body, then paints a flat cartoon figure over every one it finds. But it recognizes only a body seen whole — and in this early Lumière film the photographers are half-hidden by the dock, by their own cameras, by one another. Those it cannot parse are left as film. The identity is replaced only where the body reads plainly; where the first glance fails, the original survives — possession decided at the moment of recognition.
