Cars move forward if the space ahead is clear. If not, they stop—forming traffic jams.

Where does traffic enter Rule 184? It doesn't. There is no vehicle, no velocity, no road, no congestion state — only a binary rule on immediate neighbors. Traffic appears only when the rule is read across space and time; it lives at the level of our encounter with the system, not in any single step. What escapes here is not an image but a behavior — and the reading isn't a mistake: a row of bits stands for cars not by resembling them but by preserving what we recognize as their behavior.
